Where Are They Now?

My father mentioned in his poem (link: A Message from Father to Son) that, in the year 1967, migration from selo Besiste and the remaining villages of Mariovo began. My family’s journey from Besiste to Vienna, Austria commenced in the 1970s. During our ten-month stay in Vienna, my father and I worked in a steel factory, all the while awaiting approval of our application for Canadian visas. Soon after approval, we reached our destination of Toronto, in the province of Ontario. My father sent me to a public school to continue my education, grades 8 and on, and I was immediately faced with the challenges that continue to hit all non-English speaking immigrants; namely, having to cope with the daunting task of living in a big city where English was the spoken language. This was indeed difficult for my family and I.

Over the years, a vast number of other Macedonian families migrated to Canada in search of prosperity. During the 1980s and 1990s, it was not uncommon for many Besistanci to travel to Besiste for their vacations. Unfortunately, it took me over 35 years to return to the place of my birth. In fact, my first visit back did not occur until recently, 2006 to be specific. I shall never forget that experience, and it will stay in my heart for the rest of my life.

I am certain that many share my experience, or at least, have very similar ones; my story is not uncommon. I welcome you to share your story with all of us. Please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will be more than happy to read it, and I would be honoured to post it on my site.
