My Book

Titled: "LIFE IN THE VILLAGE: Childhood Memories"

This book is about me: about my humble beginnings in a small village in Macedonia that had no electricity and provided only the very basics of life; about how I surprised everyone by surviving my 10th birthday; about my childhood memories of growing up and hard work; about my journey to Vienna and getting my first job; about my journey across the ocean with my parents and only a few possessions in our suitcases.

Self published in August 2015 this "coffee table" book contains over three hundred high quality digital photos and over forty articles capturing the past, just the way you rember it. It reawakens the memories of your birth place, but it also shows the deterioration, such as the erosion of the rustic and beautiful stone houses with red roofs that give the Mariovo region uniqueness within Macedonia and which will soon disappear as our elderly pass on.

This book is being sold at cost. Twenty five percent from the sale of every book will be donated by me equally to each villager for his or her own personal use.

These are our forgotten people...

Why The Book?

My father was well-liked and well-known in Mariovo and the city of Prilep, Macedonia. He had a wealth of knowledge about the history of the region he was often approached by people to answer their questions. It was fascinating to listen to the many conversations he had with the community members and the visitors that came from Prilep. My father was very personable and was happy to be engaged in lengthy conversations about the ``good old days``. He asked me many times to document his wealth of information and put it on the computer so everyone could remember him after he was gone.

With my busy personal life I decided to leave this sharing of information for another day. When my father passed away, I realized too late that not only had I lost my father, but I also lost that wealth of information that only my father knew. I was left with no documents, books, or childhood photos to show my children about my roots and those of their grandfather. This bothered me for quite a long time and one day I decided to do something about it. When I am gone, I want my children and their children to learn about their father, grandfather and great- grandfather, where they came from and how they used to live.

During my visit in 2010 to Prilep, I visited the library to gather some books about the region of Mariovo. The Director of the library told me that there were no books about Mariovo. The only book is written by Stale Popov who was born in the Mariovski region and wrote many poems about the region.

I asked the Director a very simple question: if I wrote a book about the region, would he add it to the library collection? He smiled and quickly responded: ‘My friend, if you write a book, I would be more than happy to add it to the library. We shook hands and I told him that one day in the not too distant future I would make a special visit to his library to personally deliver my book.

These are some of the reasons why I wrote my book about the region where I was born and lived during my childhood years. Leaving the village when I was 15 years old left me with lots of memories . I hope that my book about my experiences in a new country will be appreciated and of interest to the younger generation who have Macedonian roots.

The next book will be about me: about how I settled in a large city and furthered my education; about how, with hard work and perseverance, ...
